Biographical Background

Photography was a part of my family. During the early twentieth century my grandfather, August von Holten, set up his own photography studio in Germany. Similarly, my father, Johann von Holten, developed images during the 1940's and 1950's. I too started in photography by developing black and white images in the 1960's. Of course, I brought a camera on all outings. By the 1970's I was sidetracked by a career - educational computing; one that involved design skills, but left time only for photography as a hobby.

During the past six years I have been able to take another step forward. With the help of photo workshops and photographic affiliations, my efforts are now directed towards exhibitions and sales of prints and note cards.

Interests

Due to a strong interest in plants, gardens, wildflowers, and a background in botanical illustration, my photographic interests are primarily focused on nature, whether botanicals or landscapes. For both interests, I attempt to preserve images on paper so that they may be seen and enjoyed at leisure; images which would otherwise pass too quickly through our lives.

Whether water or reflections in water, spring wildflowers or fall foliage, beach or mountain scenics, or the occasional architectural abstracts in fog, rain, sunshine, or snow, my photography aims for graceful, serene, and simple images that calm the mind. Whether distant landscapes or close up images, I hope to create visual statements that express the harmony and patterns found in nature.
